Flood mitigation measures
By Giona Cattaneo
Flood mitigation approaches fall into two categories: structural and non-structural. Structural forms of mitigation mitigate harm by reconstructing landscapes. Non-structural measures reduce damage by removing people and property out of risk areas (National Conference of State Legislatures, s. d.).
According to Government (2018), it is important to understand how effective are individual measures for flood mitigation impact when we consider structural solutions for flood mitigation.
Depending on locality and the nature of the flooding, there are a certain number of structural and non-structural mitigation measures that may be available. However, flood mitigation measures may only reduce the impact of flooding. There is no amount of intervention that can completely stop heavy rain or high tides.
